How to Do Norbert's Gambit: Questrade & Wealthsimple
Want to convert Canadian dollars (CAD) to US dollars (USD) without paying the painful 1.5% to 2.5% fee charged by traditional banks and brokerages? Norbert's Gambit is the undisputed gold-standard strategy. Here is our complete 2026 guide on how to execute it on both Questrade and Wealthsimple.
1. What is Norbert's Gambit?
Norbert's Gambit is a completely legal, SEC/CIRO-compliant method used by Canadian investors to bypass currency conversion markups. Instead of performing a standard retail currency swap (where banks pocket a 1.5%–2.5% spread), you buy a cross-listed fund in CAD, have it journaled over to its USD twin, and sell it in USD.
The most popular security used is the Global X (formerly Horizons) US Dollar Currency ETF, which trades as DLR.TO in Canadian Dollars and DLR.U.TO in US Dollars.
2. Why It Saves You Massive Money
If you convert money directly through your bank or a standard broker, look at how much you lose on a $10,000 conversion:
- Big 5 Bank Currency Swap: ~2.5% markup = $250 CAD lost
- Wealthsimple Standard FX Fee: 1.5% markup = $150 CAD lost
- Wealthsimple In-App Norbert's Gambit: Flat fee = $9.95 CAD flat
- Questrade Norbert's Gambit: $0 commissions + $9.95 journal fee = $9.95 CAD flat (or $0 with Questrade Plus)

Wealthsimple now provides a direct, self-serve journaling tool built right into the platform. You don't need to contact support or wait in live chat queues:
- Log in to your Wealthsimple profile (web or mobile app).

- Enter the number of DLR shares you wish to convert to DLR.U (the US dollar version) and click Next.
- Confirm the details of your journaling request and click Submit.
- Wait approximately 2 business days for the journaling to complete. Once DLR.U appears in your account, sell the shares for $0 commission to receive US Dollars into your USD balance!
Note: You can perform these exact same steps in reverse to convert USD back to CAD by starting with DLR.U.
Option B: The Questrade Walkthrough (Self-Serve Portal)
Buy DLR.TO in your CAD Account
In your Questrade trading workspace, search for DLR.TO (the Canadian dollar version of the Horizons / Global X USD Currency ETF).
Buy enough shares to cover your target conversion amount. Under Questrade's standard pricing, buying Canadian and US stocks and ETFs is $0 commission.
Submit Online Journal Request
You no longer need to wait in live chat queues! Use Questrade's built-in self-serve tool:

Questrade Fee & Rules
- Standard cost is $9.95 plus tax per request (unlimited free requests with Questrade Plus).

- Refrain from trading DLR while the request is in process.
- Note for RESPs: Online journaling is currently available for TFSA, RRSP, and Margin accounts. For RESP accounts, contact support via chat or phone to journal.
Wait for Journaling to Complete
Once Questrade's back office finishes processing your request, your shares will transition from DLR.TO into DLR.U.TO in your USD account holdings. You can track status anytime under the Request History tab.

Sell your DLR.U.TO shares. The cash will settle directly as pure USD in your account balance.
Questrade Selling Fee: Questrade offers $0 commission trading on Canadian and US-listed stocks and ETFs. You pay $0 commission to sell your DLR.U.TO shares.
Total Cost Breakdown: Questrade vs Wealthsimple vs IBKR

|---|---|---|---|
| Wealthsimple | Self-Serve DLR Journaling ($0 commissions) | $9.95 CAD + tax | ~2 Business Days |

When is Norbert's Gambit NOT Worth It?
Because Norbert's Gambit incurs a flat $9.95 fee on both Wealthsimple and Questrade, it is mathematically suboptimal for converting small amounts of pocket money.
The Breakeven Rule: For amounts under $750 CAD, the flat $9.95 fee is roughly equal to or higher than the standard 1.5% retail fee. Norbert's Gambit is ideal when converting $1,000 to $100,000+ where saving 1.5%–2.5% equates to hundreds or thousands of dollars.
