How Canadians Should Spend USD

Whether you're traveling south or shopping online, Canadian banks hit you with a hidden 2.5% fee on every USD purchase. Here's how to stop paying it.

The Default Trap: Standard Credit & Debit Cards

If you pull out a standard Canadian credit card (like your TD, RBC, or Scotiabank Visa) in the United States, your bank takes the daily exchange rate and slaps a 2.5% FX markup on top of it. If you buy a $1,000 USD laptop, you just donated $25 to your bank for doing absolutely nothing.

Warning: Debit Cards are even worse.

If you use a standard Canadian Debit Card at a cash register in the US, many Big 5 banks will charge you a flat "Out-of-Network" fee (often $3 to $5 per swipe) on top of the 2.5% markup. Using a Canadian debit card abroad is mathematically the most expensive way you can possibly pay for things.

The Solution: "No FX Fee" Cards

To bypass the bank fees, you need a specialized travel card. In Canada, the two undisputed kings of no-fee USD spending are Wealthsimple Chequing and Wise. But they process your conversions very differently under the hood.

Wealthsimple Chequing

Best for domestic convenience and occasional travel.

0% Bank Markup

The Wealthsimple Chequing card is a prepaid physical card that links directly to your Wealthsimple Chequing account (which earns 1.25% to 2.25% interest on your CAD balance, subject to change).

How it converts: "On the Fly"

When you swipe the card at a US terminal, Wealthsimple deducts the CAD equivalent from your account instantly. Wealthsimple promises they charge a 0% FX fee, meaning they don't add the standard 2.5% bank markup.

The "Hidden" Network Spread

Wealthsimple cards process transactions via Mastercard (though they are transitioning to Visa). Both Mastercard and Visa bake a microscopic spread (usually ~0.2% to 0.4%) into their daily corporate exchange rates. So while Wealthsimple takes a 0% cut, the network itself takes a tiny invisible slice. It is still infinitely cheaper than a traditional bank.

Wise (TransferWise)

Best for frequent travelers, expats, and holding USD.

True Mid-Market Rate

Wise operates completely differently. Instead of converting your money at the exact moment you swipe the card at the cash register, Wise gives you a multi-currency digital wallet.

How it converts: "Pre-Convert & Hold"

You convert your CAD into USD before you spend it, locking in the exact, true mid-market rate (the real spot rate you see on Google). Wise charges a transparent upfront fee (usually ~0.55%). You can test this exact math against the banks using our free CAD to USD Fee Calculator.

The USD sits in your Wise wallet. When you swipe the physical Wise Visa card in the States, it spends that USD locally like a US debit card. Because there is no currency conversion happening at the terminal, you bypass the Visa/Mastercard network spread entirely.

What About Traditional Credit Cards?

Wealthsimple and Wise are both prepaid accounts, meaning you have to fund them with your own cash first. If you prefer using a traditional credit card to borrow money, build credit, or earn reward points, you need a card that mathematically bypasses the 2.5% fee. In Canada, there are two main ways to do this:

The Premium Travel Route: Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite

This is a premium travel card that charges a true 0% FX fee on all foreign transactions. While it has an annual fee of $150 (and requires a $60k minimum personal income), it offsets this by giving you 6 free airport lounge passes per year and earning Scene+ rewards points on every purchase.

The "Cashback Loophole": Rogers Red Mastercard

This card takes a unique approach. It does charge the standard 2.5% FX fee when you buy something in USD, but it pays out 3% cashback on all US dollar purchases. This means you net a positive +0.5% return on every USD swipe. Note: To unlock this card's best features, you must be a Rogers, Fido, or Shaw customer.

The Final Verdict

If you just want the easiest possible experience and want to keep all your money in Canada earning interest until the absolute second you spend it, use Wealthsimple Chequing. If you are moving to the US, spending extended time there, or want to lock in a favorable exchange rate today to spend months down the road, use Wise.
